51st Radley Good Friday Walk

18 April 2014

The 51st anniversary race nearly did not happen, but, thanks to the last-minute efforts of Tracy Guntert of Stonhouse Crescent and Carina Coppock, a past resident of Radley who now lives in Abingdon, it did. However, despite it being a beautiful sunny April morning, the turnout was poor with many familiar faces absent. This was no doubt due to the short notice given to organise this year’s walk. Had it not been for a contingent of local Sea Cadets, it would hardly have been worthy of being an event at all. Next year the event will be organised by Jodie Steptoe, granddaughter of George Steptoe one of the two competitors in the original race that started it all back in 1963. The threat to the 50 year-old tradition had been picked up by the local press, and a photographer was on hand to record the event.

As usual, the venue for the start and finish of the race is the Bowyer Arms, where preparations for this year’s event can be seen to be underway.

12th Radley Triangle 2014

For younger participants and those who favoured a shorter walk, there was the popular Radley Triangle – down over the railway bridge to Lower Radley, around the Lower Radley loop and back.
