Featured Picture for April 2014

Views across the Green Belt, looking towards Oxford, from near the Church car park.

photograph by B Crowley

This sweeping view across the Oxford Green Belt, taken from near the church car park on 8th April, is one of those threatened by the proposals to build over 700 new homes in Radley (see News story). The SE corner of the city is just visible near the horizon on the left. The rising land to the right is the northern edge of the Nuneham Courtenay escarpment, which bounds the east bank of the River Thames. A train can be seen travelling between Oxford and Didcot. It is amazing that the so called review of the Green Belt regards this land to be in some sense failing to meet the Green Belt criteria in terms of openness, natural beauty and the setting of the City.
