Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter August 2016

What we have been doing

The July meeting was a “Bring and share” afternoon with a quiz organised by Judith,  which was enjoyed by everyone.  The table  was overflowing  with a selection of cakes and savoury items from which to choose.

We also had a debate on the motion put to the Members last month as to whether or not  to allow people outside of the village to become members. It was agreed that we should allow people from outside of the village  to join us if they wish but the membership would be limited to  120 members and Radley people would take precedence.   This would then be reviewed in 2018.

The members who went to Newbury Races had a good evening and some even came back with some winnings.

The car boot sale held at the same time as the Flower Show in the Village Hall was a great success.  It was organised at very short notice but several village clubs took part and had a stall on the lawn outside the Hall.

Future dates…….

  • Savill Gardens at Windsor in August 2016

The cost will be £23 for members and £25 for non-members.

The Savill Garden is one of Britain’s greatest ornamental gardens.  It was created by Sir Eric Savill in the 1930’s and is 35 acres of contemporary and classically designed gardens and exotic woodland.  It is a place of constant discovery and interlocking gardens containing distinctive areas.  There is a café/restaurant at the Savill Building or a picnic area at Obelisk Pond.  There is also a gift shop and plant sales area.

  • Hughendon ( NT ) in September 2016

This was the home of Benjamin Disraeli and is set in the unspoiled Chiltern valley. It is full of fascinating personal memorabilia.  It later became the headquarters for a top secret second world war operation and has an exhibition of wartime life.

  • Skegness November/December 2016

As a group we have never been to Lincolnshire so we thought we should pay it a visit!!!  It is of course a Festive Break.

The hotel is The Quorn and it is situated on the sea front.  All the rooms have en-suite facilities with T.V. and tea and coffee maker. It is family run and has a good reputation.  We will be the only group there and the manageress says we will be treated as a House Party!!

We will have one day in Lincoln and one day visiting Newark and Spalding.  We also have a day touring the Wolds via Horncastle and Louth.  On the way home we call at Melton Mowbray, famous for its pork pies and Stilton cheese, which we did visit many years ago.

The cost of this holiday is £300.  The balance to be paid in September.

  • Exmouth and Devon towns in May 2017

This is a tour of Devon Coastal towns based in Exmouth at the Manor Hotel, situated close to the beach, with views across Exmouth Bay.  All the rooms have en-suite facilities.  The hotel has a bar and a lift to all floors.

On the journey to Devon we call at the Donkey Sanctuary near Exmouth.  Other days we visit Sidmouth, Dawlish and Teignmouth and have a circular tour crossing the river Dart and spending time in Torquay.  There will be a free day to do your own thing and use your bus pass if you wish.
