Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter December 2018

What we have been doing

November has been a busy month for the Retirement Group with a lot of things going on. First we had our visit to the New Theatre for a guided tour back stage.  This proved to be very interesting with lots of information about the history of the theatre and the workings of it.  We saw where all  the  sound and lighting equipment was stored during a performance, the tiny dressing rooms and a very small room set aside for the wardrobe department.  It’s amazing how they fit ironing boards, washing machines and dryers plus costumes into such a small space. We also saw the now disused rotating stage and we got to stand on the stage and feel how it must seem to look out onto the audience.

Next we had our hastily arranged visit to the exhibition of paintings by Keith Jancz, the mouth painter, who was our speaker in September.  This was held at 78 Derngate in Northampton, which is also the house designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.  Keith was there to show us around and explain where the inspiration for his paintings came from.  After looking around the exhibition we were then taken on a guided tour of the house which again was very interesting.  It was amazing to see how the extraordinarily modern and striking interior could transform the house into something of charm and international importance.  This is the only house designed by Charles Rennie  Macintosh in England.

Our meeting in November was a visit from Waitrose for a wine and cheese afternoon.  This proved very popular with members.   We also had a visit from Elaine from the Bowyers to tell us about the “Meet and Mingle” being set up.  This will be an informal get together on a Monday afternoon for tea/coffee and maybe bingo or something similar. More information about this can be obtained from the Bowyers Arms.  Several members were interested in attending. During the meeting Eric Blanks thanked members for the cake to celebrate his 90th birthday in October.

Then on Saturday 17th November we had the Annual Bazaar where we had our usual cake stall and “white elephant” stall.  A big thank you must go out to all of those who either supported it, or contributed to it, and worked hard to make it another very successful day.

We still have our film afternoon and our holiday to Harrogate to come.  More of this next time.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11th December which will be our Christmas party.

Holidays

Isle of Man: May 2019

We cross the ferry to the Isle of Man from Heysham where we are staying at The Chesterfield Hotel in Douglas, located on the sea front, and it provides all the usual facilities.  It has a lounge, bar, restaurant and a lift.

We will have three days exploring the island including a journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway where there should  be magnificent views of “six countries” weather permitting !!!!  You will have a free day to rest or try out one of the other railways and go on a horse tram.

The cost of the holiday is £550 including the ferry crossings and the railway but could be reduced as the Barmouth one was if we get enough people.

Deposits of £40 should have been paid.

Spain: April 2019.  Hotel Port Denia on the Costa Blanca.

This is a 7 day all inclusive holiday.

If you are interested in this holiday please contact Judith on Ab 531001

All holidays are open to family and friends so if you are interested in our holidays please contact Dot Hewlett  on Ab 531082.  There are still places available for the Isle of Man
