Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter December 2019

What we have been doing

Our speaker for the November meeting was David Barbour MVO who gave a very interesting talk about Swann Upping.  He explained that the ceremony takes place in July and travels from Sunbury lock to Abingdon.  The boatmen wear traditional costume and row in wooden skiffs with the royal flag flying at the front and the Swan Upping pennant at the rear.  The swans are owned by the Worshipful Companies of the Vintners and Dyers, who were granted the privilege of ownership by the Crown in the 15C, and the Queen.  In the past the swans owned by the Vintners and Dyers were marked by clipping their beaks but that practice has now stopped and the swans are ringed.  The purpose of the Swan Upping is to monitor the welfare and encourage conservation of the protected mute swan.  They are taken out of the water and weighed and measured before tagging .  In this way they can assess the health and the number of swans on the river Thames.  The swans face many hazards as they can get tangled up in fishing lines left in the water and also by other objects found floating in the river.   A lot of their work is in schools teaching them about the swans and the conservation of the river.

After all the rain recently we were pleasantly surprised to have a dry day for the Annual Village Bazaar.  We had a variety of stalls, a huge raffle (65 prizes) together with refreshments.  This is always a lovely way for the village to get together and again this year proved very successful.

A report of the holiday to the Isle of Wight will be given next month.

Don’t forget the “Meet and Mingle” sessions at the Bowyer Arms each Monday from 12pm where you can have a chat with others.
