Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter January 2019

What we have been doing

The film show of Peter Rabbit was a huge success, so much so that it has been requested that we repeat it.  So look out for more information of future films.

The holiday to Harrogate was probably the best one that Dot has arranged.  We stayed at the Cairn Hotel in Harrogate which is a Victorian hotel 5mins from the centre of town.  The rooms were very spacious and the staff very good and efficient. The food was served buffet style but the staff had the system worked out with military precision but without a rush for us.  It was first class with plenty of choice. We stopped in Chesterfield on the way there and Litchfield on the return journey. While there we visited the Yorkshire Dales with stops at Ripon and Hawes, home to Wensleydale cheese. (I have never seen so many varieties of  cheese). We also had a free day to explore Harrogate and a lovely day in York. The weather was much milder than we expected and I think the holiday was enjoyed by all who went on it.

Dot has decided to retire from organising the holidays after the one to the Isle of Man but it is hoped to carry on afterwards and a trip to the Isle of Wight has already been arranged.  We must thank Dot for all her hard work over the past 12 years and hope she is able to enjoy the holidays without the pressure of arranging everything.

Our meeting in November was our Christmas party when were entertained by Kate Wilkinson who sang songs from the shows and also carols which we were able to join in with.  We also had a short sketch by some of the Committee to the tune of Pretty Woman complete with an appearance from Roy Orbison! The excellent tea was again organised by Sue and Carol who worked hard  making sandwiches and cakes.

Future dates

Our next meeting is Tuesday January 8th 2019. This will be our annual Auction so if you have any unwanted presents bring them along.

Anniversary Lunch 19th January 2019.  Coseners House

Cost is £28.

We have no more outings until the spring.

Isle of Man: May 2019

We cross the ferry to the Isle of Man from Heysham where we are staying at The Chesterfield Hotel in Douglas, located on the sea front, and it provides all the usual facilities.  It has a lounge, bar, restaurant and a lift.

We will have three days exploring the island including a journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway where there should  be magnificent views of “six countries” weather permitting !!!! You will have a free day to rest or try out one of the other railways or go on a horse tram.

The cost of the holiday is £550 including the ferry crossings and the railway but could be reduced, as the Barmouth one was, if we get enough people.

Deposits of £40 should have been paid.

Dot is giving up organising the holidays after the Isle of Man.  She has done a wonderful job for the past 12 years and a big thank you must go to her for all her hard work.
