Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter January 2020

What we have been doing

Twenty seven members and friends went to the Isle of Wight for a Tinsel and Turkey break at the end of November.  This was the last time Dot Hewlett organised a holiday for Radley Retirement Group and she has now given up after twelve years.  She was thanked for all her hard work during this time.  Chris Gasson has taken on this task for the future.  Although the weather wasn’t very good at the start of the holiday it brightened up towards the end of the week and we had a couple of lovely sunny days.  The weather didn’t stop us enjoying a trip around the island stopping off at the Pearl shop to see the lovely jewellery, a visit to the Needles and a Vineyard, where we were able to sample the wine, and a visit to Osbourne House.  Unfortunately this was the worst day for weather and we were unable to enjoy the lovely grounds.  We did however enjoy a tour of the house dressed as it would have been in Queen Victoria’s time.  On the return journey home we stopped off at a garden centre where we saw some lovely Christmas decorations, including some hilarious singing penguins.  We also visited Winchester Christmas Market.  Everyone who went said that they enjoyed the holiday despite the weather.

Our December meeting was our Christmas party where we were entertained by Lynda Styan and her companion who sang songs from the 30s and 40s, interspersed with some Christmas songs.  Dot Hewlett was presented with a gift for all her hard work in organising the annual holidays and Audrey Berry was given a birthday card as it was her 93rd birthday on that day.  Christmas cards to members were distributed and we enjoyed mince pies and sausage rolls with mulled wine on a festive afternoon.

Don’t forget the “Meet and Mingle” sessions at the Bowyer Arms each Monday from 12pm where you can have a chat with others.
