Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter August 2018

What we have been doing

In June we had our annual visit to Newbury races.  This proved a very good evening and most,  if not all,  came home with winnings.  Many are looking forward to next year when they hope to have even more success.

We had a cake stall at the “Flower Show and Fun day” which proved very successful.  Thank you to all those who made cakes,  helped sell them,  or bought them.

In July our speaker was John Chipperfield who told us of the many papers produced locally in the past  but which have now amalgamated, and gave us an insight into the work of a young journalist.  He started working for the Oxford Mail as a 15 year old, while still at school,  writing reports of football matches.  He is still working for the Oxford Mail even though he is officially “retired”, writing the “memories of the past” features.  He had many interesting stories to tell us.

After the heat of recent weeks it was quite nice to have a cooler day for our visit to Bournemouth.  This enabled us to enjoy the day without wilting after ½  hour.  We were able to enjoy the lovely gardens with its flower displays and where there were several benches available for rests, or walk along the seafront with a cool breeze blowing, or visit the surrounding attractions, or simply do some retail shopping.  There was something for everyone and it proved a very successful day out.

Future dates

Our next meeting Tuesday 14th August when our speaker is Mr Alan Brewer.  His talk is entitled “Up in the Clouds”. Mr Brewer was a steward on the airlines and occasionally on a flight with the Queen.  He has many amusing stories to tell.

We will have three days exploring the island including a journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway where there should  be magnificent views of “six countries” weather permitting !!!!  You will have a free day to rest or try out one of the other railways and go on a horse tram.
