Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter June 2015

Our May meeting was a talk by Gillian Cane called “The Miracle of Bletchley Park” This proved to be a most interesting talk and Gillian told us how recently the huts, restaurant  and  toilets  had all  been upgraded with the help of grants and money raised.   The Park was originally owned by private owners who ran the estate well, and had at one time 40 full time gardeners!!  As they had no heirs it was to be sold.   At the time MI6 needed somewhere to set up a coding and de-coding site which was being developed .  Bletchley Park was thought to be the ideal place for this as it had good transport links with the city.  As the villagers became more interested in what was going on at the Park  they  were told it was Captain Ridleys  hunting party,  as cover for their work ,and guns were let off at intervals to make this more authentic.  Many debutants were employed as admin staff as it was assumed they would be very discreet about the work that was carried on there.  All staff  were sworn to secrecy about their work and did not even discuss it with others, even  those who worked alongside them at Bletchley Park.  Gillian told us several  amusing  stories of things that went on at Bletchley apart from the work on the enigma machine.

This talk gave us a good insight for our visit to the Park in August.  This outing , and any others arranged by the Retirement Club, is open to anyone who would like to come.  Please contact Diane  Shaw  on 01235  527158 or Carol Milward on 01235  526326.

Unfortunately our trip to Hampton Court Palace had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers wishing to go, which was a pity as it looked a good day out.   As the coaches are so expensive now, we need a certain number of people to fill the coach or we cannot run the trip.

We welcomed 2 new members this month.
