Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter March 2016

rrg

What we have been doing:

Our meeting in February  was  a talk given by Irene Tyack called “The Yellow Hat Tribe”.  For those who have never heard Irene’s talk it is about her hard  life  bringing up a family with little or no money.  She spent many years working in the fields around Herefordshire,  picking potatoes, strawberries, blackcurrants and apples to support her family of six.  She moved to the Cotswolds  in the eighties, working in various jobs, including cleaning, cooking, as a bar maid and waitress and as a popular nanny, to keep her family as they grew.  One day, at the lowest point of her life, as she scribbled on the back of an envelope containing a bill she couldn’t pay, a tiny row of crazy people wearing  large hats  appeared.   That little tribe stayed in her mind for many years.  She eventually met Vince Tyack, an entrepreneur who liked a challenge; so much so, he decided to farm ostriches.  He entertained Irene by telling her of his travels, particularly to Africa and the desert, and she suddenly realised at that moment that the little tribe with the crazy hats should live in the desert.  From this point Irene began painting them in amusing  and bizarre situations.  Since then she has gone on to paint her little tribe in many guises and fulfil a lifetimes ambition.  To paint.  Her pictures are bright and colourful but always amusing.  She brought with her cards, mugs and bags that were for sale.

Future dates…….

Our first outing for this year will be a visit to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley  in April.

This is one of the largest open air museums in the UK.  There are 26 acres to explore, come rain or shine with a village and charismatic residents to chat  to, trams to ride, games to play, things being made, stories to hear, so much to see and do. Older people will feel nostalgic seeing the shops of old as they remember them.  There is also a tram to the canal or you can go underground  to visit a mine.  There are cafes and a fish and  chip shop selling chips in newspaper.

The cost is £27 for members and £29 for non-members.
