Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter June 2018

What we have been doing

Our speaker in May was Kevin Little whose talk was entitled “Smelly Fish Man”.  This was quite a surprise talk as there was not much about fish.  Mr Little had been a fishmonger in Reading as had his father before him.

The street where his shop was, had been an open sewer in days gone by but had been covered over and this was called “Smelly Alley” – hence the name.  He told us many amusing stories about his time as a fishmonger and his encounters with the Health Inspectors.  He also owns an animal sanctuary for unwanted animals on the Somerset/Devon border and he showed slides of some of these and told us about the characters of some of them.

Members were asked to donate any cakes, pies, jams or handicrafts for our stall at the “Summer fun day and flower show” on Saturday June 30th.

The holiday to Barmouth will be in next months’ report.

Future dates

Our next meeting Tuesday 12th June which is our “Summer meeting”.

Holidays

  • Harrogate and York: November 2018

This is a festive break.

The Hotel is The Cairn Hotel Harrogate.  It has all the usual facilities with a lift to all floors.  There is live entertainment each evening.  We will be having one day in York and one day a circular tour of the Yorkshire Dales.  There will be a free day to enjoy Harrogate.

On the journey there, we will be stopping in Chesterfield and on the return at Litchfield.

The cost of the holiday is £300 (cheaper than the last November one, except for singles (£80).  Deposits of £40 to be paid in April.

  • Isle of Man: May 2019

We cross the ferry to the Isle of Man from Heysham where we are staying at The Chesterfield Hotel in Douglas, located on the sea front, and it provides all the usual facilities.  It has a lounge, bar, restaurant and a lift.

We will have three days exploring the island including a journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway where there should  be magnificent views of “six countries” weather permitting !!!!  You will have a free day to rest or try out one of the other railways and go on a horse tram.

The cost of the holiday is £550 including the ferry crossings and the railway but could be reduced as the Barmouth one was if we get enough people.

Deposits of £40 to be paid in November.

  • Spain: April 2019. Hotel Port Denia on the Costa Blanca.

This is a 7 day all inclusive holiday.

If you are interested in this holiday please contact Judith on Ab 531001
