What we have been doing

On a very cold, icy morning with snow on the ground, 20 members and friends, boarded a coach to take us to Gatwick for our flight to Spain.  We arrived in lovely sunshine which was a real pleasure.  We stayed at the Triton hotel in Benalmadina where we were looked after very well.  The meals were buffet style and there was plenty of variety and something for all nationalities.  (It was easy to over-eat)!!!

We had optional trips to Marbella and Puerto Banus, Estapona, Gibraltar and El Chorro.  Included in our package was a visit to Antequera and The Dolmen Site which is one of the best examples of the European Megalithic period.  They are constructions made of large stones used for ritual and funerary purposes.  It seemed as if everyone enjoyed the holiday and another one has now been booked for next year.

Our speaker in April was Chris Ward whose gave us a talk with beautiful slides about our common garden birds.  His talk was entitled “101 things you did not know about garden birds” and he told us some fascinating things about them.  He also had some lovely prints and cards of birds which he had photographed himself, which were for sale.

Our outing for April was a visit to the Oakham Treasures  Museum near Bristol.  Only 14 members and friends went on this visit but what a treat others missed.  On reading the visitors book it stated that this museum had not been advertised enough and not enough people knew about it.  This was very true.  It was FULL of memorabilia.  There were tractors and farm implements, tools of every description, and a host of other things that had been collected over the years.  There was an amazing collection of shops complete with all their stock and even a collection of old post boxes.  There were truly too many items to state here but a visit brought back many memories of things we had forgotten about.

Future dates

Our next meeting Tuesday 9th May when our speaker is Kevin Little and his talk is “Smelly Fish Man”.

Holidays.

  • Barmouth: May 2018

This is a holiday in North Wales with two special days included.  One day we shall be going on the Welsh Highland Railway and another day visiting Portmerion, both included in the price of the holiday. We are staying at the Arbour Hotel situated on the flat seafront.  All rooms have en-suite facilities.  The Hotel has a bar and lift.  There will be a free day to do your own thing, perhaps stroll across the estuary on the long wooden bridge or catch another train!!!

As we now have 40 people Barnes have reduced the cost by £30 to £390.

  • Harrogate and York: November 2018

This is a festive break.

The Hotel is The Cairn Hotel Harrogate.  It has all the usual facilities with a lift to all floors.  Live entertainment each evening.  We will be having one day in York and one day a circular tour of the Yorkshire Dales.  There will be a free day to enjoy Harrogate.

On the journey there, we will be stopping in Chesterfield and on the return at Litchfield.

The cost of the holiday is £300 (cheaper than the last November one, except for singles (£80).  Deposits of £40 to be paid in April.

  • Isle of Man: May 2019

We cross the ferry to the Isle of Man from Heysham where we are staying at The Chesterfield Hotel in Douglas, located on the sea front, and it provides all the usual facilities.  It has a lounge, bar, restaurant and a lift.

We will have three days exploring the island including a journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway where there should  be magnificent views of “six countries” weather permitting !!!!  You will have a free day to rest or try out one of the other railways and go on a horse tram.

The cost of the holiday is £550 including the ferry crossings and the railway but could be reduced as the Barmouth one was if we get enough people.

Deposits of £40 to be paid in November.

All holidays are open to family and friends so if you are interested in our holidays please contact Dot Hewlett  on Ab 531082.  There are still places available for Harrogate and the Isle of Man
