Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter May 2020

Radley Retirement Group, along with all the other clubs and societies, has now had to stop all meetings so we have nothing to report about what we have been doing.  Hopefully everyone is keeping safe and managing in these unusual times.

The holiday to Newquay has now been officially cancelled along with our visits to the Milestones Museum and Wells Cathedral, but maybe these can be arranged for a future time.

Saga has been in touch with Judith regarding our holiday abroad next year and have stated that there is no availability for Malta in 2021.  She has therefore provisionally booked a holiday to Majorca which is as follows.

Universal Hotel Perla, S’Illot,  Majorca for a week in April.  The cost is £705pp single and £649pp double. For those who had booked for this year there is the £100 Saga have allowed us to take off.

If you are interested in this holiday please contact Judith on Ab. 531001 as soon as possible.

Here is a report which was entered into the Radley News after the first meeting of RRG  in January 1989 which may be of interest.

Radley Pensioners Association

The second meeting took place on Tuesday 10th January in the Church Room with over forty people in attendance. Joy Alexander, the Chairman, opened the meeting by expressing her pleasure at the increase in numbers attending and hoped that, as the word spread around, the Association might steadily grow.  She was pleased to inform that a cheque for £50 had been received from Radley Parish Council in order to help finance the setting up of the Association.  The Chairman then gave a resume of the discussion that had taken place  at the first meeting of the committee.  As a result it was agreed that the Radley Association would become affiliated to the National Federation of Retirement Pensioners’ Association.  It had also been agreed that meetings would be held on the second Tuesday of each month in the Church Room at 2.30 p.m.  An invitation had been received from the Abingdon Area Council, to which Radley will be affiliated, for 3 members to attend a meeting in the Abbey Hall on the 7th February.  There being no volunteers from the general meeting, members of the committee will attend.  Mr Doug Rawlinson, the Social Secretary, then outlined some of his plans for speakers, outings etc., but stressed that until the finances of the association were on a sounder footing, he would have to restrict himself in the choice of speakers in order to eke out the funds available.  To this end, he has volunteered to present a talk with slides of Radley past and present at the next meeting on Tuesday 14th February.  Please put this date in your diary now as an event not to be missed. He felt it might be possible to arrange an outing, perhaps in September.  Tea was then served and enjoyed to the accompaniment of a musical selection of favourite tunes played on the organ by Doug Rawlinson.  During the tea interval, over 40 people paid their annual subscription of £1.00. and so they were obviously in favour of the programme suggestions.  Why not go along to the next meeting and swell the numbers?  The raffle was then drawn and several people were lucky winners and the proceeds will help to get the funds off to a good start.  If transport to the meetings is required, please contact Mr Maurice Baker on Oxford 735248.  Don’t forget – date for your diary Tuesday 14th February, 2.30 p.m. Church Room.

Tea hostesses: Mrs Bristow, Mrs Betterton, Mrs Allen and Mrs Diffey.

Radley Retirement Group is no longer affiliated to the National Federation of Retirement Pensioners Association.
