Radley Retirement Group – Newsletter November 2016

What we have been doing

Our speaker for the November meeting was Andrew Moss  whose talk was called “The Radcliffe Infirmary”.  This was a most informative talk about  the progress of the Infirmary and how its benefactors  enabled it to grow.  As many of us who have used the Infirmary in the past remembered the names of the various wards, we were told how each one was named after a person who gave so much to the Infirmary and allowed it to grow into one of the world’s best hospitals.  He also told us that it was the first hospital to use penicillin and was also at the forefront of physiotherapy, as the hospital employed “rubbers” who massaged patients after surgery to advance their healing.

Future dates……

  • Christmas shopping at Westfield, Shepherds Bush in  November 2016

Cost will be £19.50 for members and £21.50 for non-members

This is one of the largest shopping centres in the country, with about 255 shops.  Whether you are looking for Gucci and Louis Vuitton, or something considerably more modest, you should find something there to interest you.  Yes, there is a M&S (bigger than the Marble Arch branch) and it has a café.  It’s one of about 75 places to eat.  Look no further for all your shopping this Christmas.

Looking ahead Diane is working hard to plan and book outings for next year.  We can look forward to some new and interesting places to visit when we see next year’s programme.  Everything will depend on the number of people who sign up to go.  We were particularly disappointed that the outings to Hughenden Manor and the Savill  gardens had to be cancelled due to lack of support.  Coaches are now very expensive and we need to have most of the seats occupied in order to cover the costs.  Friends, family, visitors and other local people are welcome on outings.  If you can’t come yourself, then do please pass the word on to anyone who might be interested in future outings.

If anyone is interested in going on any of our  trips  please contact Diane Shaw on 01235 527158 to see if there are any spaces.

  • Christmas Bazaar
  • Don’t forget that Radley Retirement Group is taking over the organising of the Christmas Bazaar this year This will be held on Saturday November 19th from 1pm to 4pm. in the village hall.  It will take the normal format  with stalls and a grand raffle.   Please keep this date free and support the Bazaar.

Theatre trip

  • Sand in the sandwiches was enjoyed by those who went to see it at The Playhouse.

If you are interested in going on a theatre trip please see Andrea Saunders. Payment must be made at the time of booking.  Again these are open to anyone.

  • Skegness November/December 2016

As a group we have never been to Lincolnshire so we thought we should pay it a visit!!!  It is of course a Festive Break.

The hotel is The Quorn and it is situated on the sea front.  All the rooms have en-suite facilities with T.V. and tea and coffee maker. It is family run and has a good reputation.  We will be the only group there and the manageress says we will be treated as a House Party!!

We will have one day in Lincoln and one day visiting Newark and Spalding.  We also have a day touring the Wolds via Horncastle and Louth.  On the way home we call at Melton Mowbray, famous for its pork pies and Stilton cheese, which we did visit many years ago.

Labels and information have now been distributed to those going on this holiday.

  • Exmouth and Devon towns in May 2017

This is a tour of Devon Coastal towns based in Exmouth at the Manor Hotel, situated close to the beach, with views across Exmouth Bay.  All the rooms have en-suite facilities.  The hotel has a bar and a lift to all floors.

On the journey to Devon we call at the Donkey Sanctuary near Exmouth.  Other days we visit Sidmouth, Dawlish and Teignmouth and have a circular tour crossing the river Dart and spending time in Torquay.  There will be a free day to do your own thing and use your bus pass if you wish.

The cost of the holiday is £395 with the deposit of £40 to be paid in January.

All holidays are open to family and friends so if you are interested in our holidays please contact Dot Hewlett  on Ab 531082

  • There are no new developments at present . The trip to Spain, organised by Judith through Saga goes ahead in March.
