What we have been doing

In September our speaker was Keith Jancz who explained how he painted with his mouth after becoming paralysed from the chest down. He has exhibited all around the world and met Prince Charles and Prince William. He told us how he had to practice to get things right and also to experiment with different mediums.  He showed us several of his lovely paintings and it was lovely to hear his enthusiasm for his craft and his love of life in spite of his difficulties.

Before we had our main speaker we had an invitation to join the Saturday afternoon tea dances which are held in the Wellbeing  Centre in Abingdon on behalf of Age Concern.  Ron Sykes and Win invited members and friends to join them, where they would also enjoy and nice cup of tea/coffee and lovely cakes!

Our visit to the Houses of Parliament was very good.  Our Guide was very informed and gave us many interesting points about the building and how Parliament came to be in place.  As there was renovation work going on we were taken along passages not normally seen by the public.  Some of the members visited the Suffragette exhibition which was also being held in the Houses of Parliament.

On a blustery but warm day we went by coach to Kintbury, near Newbury, for our trip on the Kennet and Avon canal.  We were taken on a horse drawn boat for a 2hour leisurely ride through the countryside.  Our boat was drawn by the magnificent horse “Drummer” who pulled the boat along the canal, as the boat has no engine.  On board we could buy drinks and snacks.  After our trip we went into Newbury where we were able to buy lunch and do some shopping before returning home.

Future dates

Our next meeting Tuesday 9th October when the speaker will be Chris Caddy and he will tell us about “The Music of Eric Coates”.
