Vale of White Horse planning committee decisions on the strategic housing sites

Planning applications for both of the strategic housing sites in Radley have both been considered by the Vale’s planning committee:

Radley College’s application for outline consent for the construction of 240 homes on the NW Radley site was considered on 30 May. The committee authorised officers to grant permission once details of section 106 payments and other conditions have been finalised. The Parish Council was particularly pleased that, following arguments put forcefully by our local councillors, the Church Housing Group and ourselves, the Committee instructed officers to include a condition safeguarding the area of open space along the southern boundary of the site so as not to preclude the future provision of a footpath/cycle link through to the existing village. We believe this to be important in ensuring strong links are built up between the existing and new communities.

Redrow’s application for full consent for the construction of 283 dwellings on land to the south of Kennington was considered by the planning committee on 18 June. The Parish Council was pleased that in this case the planning committee decided to defer a decision until more work has been done to justify Redrow’s proposals on the mix of housing to be provided. This again followed strong statements from ourselves, the Church Housing Group and our councillors that the proposed mix was at odds with the Vale’s own guidelines and did not provide adequate numbers of smaller homes for first time buyers and downsizers.  The application will now have to go back to the planning committee to be looked at again once the further work has been completed.

The Parish Council continues to be very concerned about a number of matters relating to the two developments including the delivery of adequate sewerage infrastructure, the enlargement of Radley Primary School, the combined impact of all the new development on Sugworth Lane traffic and the management of construction traffic. The Council will continue to monitor progress on these things very closely, and to bring pressure to bear when needed.
